Your Filtered Water Is Still Full of Microplastics

The World Health Organisation confirmed it in 2019, and clinical longevity physicians have been acting on it ever since: the average person is consuming approximately five grams of microplastic particles per week through drinking water alone — the mass of a credit card, ingested invisibly, every seven days, for an entire lifetime.

In 2024, researchers at the Università Vanvitelli in Naples published a landmark study in the New England Journal of Medicine examining the carotid artery plaques of 257 patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Those whose plaques contained detectable microplastics — polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride being the dominant polymers identified — were 4.5 times more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke, or death within 34 months of the procedure than those whose plaques were free of plastic contamination.
